What are the functions of the nervous system?

Collects information about the body’s internal and external environment, processes that information and responds to it

What is the peripheral nervous system?

Consists of nerves and supporting cells, collects information about the body’s external and internal environment.

What is the central nervous system?

Consists of the brain and spinal cord, processes the information and creates a response that is delivered to the appropriate part of the body through the peripheral nervous system.

What is the function of neurons?

Nervous system impulses are transmitted by cells

What is a neuron?

The basic unit of the nervous system

What are dendrites?

Spreading out from the cell body are short, branched extensions

What are the functions of sensory neurons?

Carry impulses from the sense organs, such as eyes to the spinal cord and brain

What are the functions of motor neurons?

Carry impulses from the brain and the spinal cord to muscles and glands.

What are the functions of interneurons?

Do the high-level work

What is a cell body?

Largest part of a typical neuron

What is an axon?

The long fiber that carries impulses away from the cell body

What is myelin sheath?

An insulating membrane

How does a nerve impulse begin?

An impulse begins when a neuron is stimulated by another neuron or by the environment

What is a threshold?

Is the minimum level of a stimulus that is required to cause an impulse in a neuron

What is synapse?

Is the point at which neuron transfers an impulse to another cell

What are neurotransmitters?

Are chemicals that transmit an impulse across a synapse to another cell

Where does processing of information occur in the nervous system?

Each of the major areas of the brain – cerebrum, cerebellum, brain stem- are responsible for processing and relaying information

What is a reflex?

Is a quick, automatic response to stimulus

What is the cerebrum?

Is responsible for the voluntary, activities of the body

What is cerebral cortex?

Is the outer layer of the cerebrum

What is the cerebellum?

Is a region of the brain that plays an important role in motor control

What is the brain stem?

Is the posterior part of the brain, adjoining and structurally continuous with the spinal cord

What is the thalamus?

Is a midline symmetrical structure of two halves, within the vertebrate brain, situated between the cerebral cortex and the midbrain.

What is the hypothalamus?

Is a portion of the brain that contains a number of small nuclei with a variety of functions.

What is dopamine?

Is a neurotransmitter of the catecholamine and phenethylamine
