Medellín is the capital and largest city of the department of Antioquia, Colombia, and the second most populous city country.4 is situated in the natural region known as the Aburrá Valley, in the central Andes, becoming the largest center such urban branch of the Andean mountain range. It straddles the Medellín river which crosses from south to north, and is the core of the metropolitan area of the Valley of Aburrá.5 The city has a population of 2,441,123 inhabitants (2014), 1 while this figure including the metropolitan area totals 3,731,447 people (2014) .1
As a provincial capital, Medellin is the seat of the Government of Antioquia, the Departmental Assembly, the Superior Court of the District of Medellin Metropolitan Area and the Attorney General, as well as various public enterprises, institutions and agencies of the Colombian state. As a financial, commercial and industrial center is home to national and international companies in sectors such as textiles, clothing, metallurgical, energy, finance, health, telecommunications, construction, automotive, and food, among others.6
It was founded with the name of Villa de Nuestra Señora de la Candelaria de Medellin on November 2, 1675 on the site of Anah, which currently corresponds to the center of town (east central). Before that, in 1616, had erected a small Indian village to which he gave the name of San Lorenzo de Aburrá, founded by the Spanish Francisco Herrera Campuzano, on the site where today the park is Poblado.7 in 1826 the city was designated the capital of the department of Antioquia by the national Congress of the Republic of Gran Colombia. After Colombia won its independence from Spain, Medellín became the capital of the Federal State of Antioquia until 1888, with the proclamation of the constitution of 1886, with which eventually becomes established capital of the department of Antioquia. During the nineteenth century, Medellín was developed as a dynamic commercial center, first exporting gold, then goods from industrialization of the city.
At the beginning of XXI century, the city has regained much of its industrial dynamism, increased security and improved education.8 9 Medellín is the most unequal city in Colombia, according to official statistics, with a Gini coefficient of 0.54, mainly marked by its poverty rate set at 22%, 10 it is considered a global city type "" enough "" by GaWC11 the most recent result that threw the global survey on the status of the Smart Cities of Indra, catalogs Medellin as one of the best cities to live in Suramérica.12

The Aburrá Valley, where Medellin is now located, was first seen by the Spanish on August 24, 1541, only 49 years after the arrival of Christopher Columbus in the Bahamas, on an expedition of 32 men who came in search land and wealth commanded by Jerónimo Luis Tejelo, who in turn took orders from Marshal Jorge Robledo. The owners of the Aburrá Valley, armed with darts, batons and tiraderas, Indians offered fierce resistance, and many committed suicide to avoid being dominated. After its initial passage through the valley, the first Spanish expedition passed Tejelo long and continued his exploration into the Magdalena River, far to the east of the valley.
