A cause and effect diagram, is also referred to as an Ishikawa or “fishbone” diagram. The
main use for this type of tool is to pinpoint and come up with causes of an effect which could be
various.( Cause & Effect,n/d). This type of diagram can be used to display the causes of the
problem or issues that come up within each step of the process. Some benefits related to utilizing
this type of process analysis tool is to identify root cause, pinpoint the causes or bottlenecks that
are causing the negative effects within the process, as well as identifying other areas of
improvement .
The cause and effect diagram can help identify Boeing’s waste handling problem:
1. Identify the problem: An excess of waste is collected through out each shift.
2. Identifying the factors ( could consist of many factors which can include but not limited
to material, systems, equipment, external forces, people interacting with current
problem or issue). In this particular case we identified the following:
• Material
• Equipment:
• People
3. Identifying causes of factors:
• Material: broken blades
• Equipment: Blades not being maintained on a timely manner and PM’s not being performed on equipment on a timely manner.
• People-Maintenance crew waiting too long on performing PM.
4. Analyzing the diagram- In this step all possible causes are reviewed and analyzed.
Further investigation or drilling down is conducted at this step to identify in further detail
the main causes or contributions to the problem. In this case one or several employees
responsible for the maintenance could be the main problem due to not following up on
the equipment and setting up a schedule for the PM”s to be done on a timely manner to
avoid stress and downtime due to equipment not being routinely checked.
