Can you imagine having to live the rest of your life in prison? In the article “Why Prisons Don’t Work” by Wilbert Rideau, He points that prison are not doing a good job, society think that making prisoners spent the rest of their life in prison will improve the neighborhood. Rideau says that prisoners they will not learn from this mistake because government and prisons don’t help to resolve the problem they just give an option; therefore when they are long time behind the bars they adopt a criminal culture for being there for too long. There are ways to fix this problems like rehabilitation. Prisoner will learn how to act in the society and help making a change on the streets. Rideau gave straight forward fact that lead to the lack of structural, emotional impact, and the limited opportunities.

Structural format isn’t shown in prisons to young men once they get put in there, which is a necessity so they know how to act when they leave one day. Many people assumed that being in jail for “x” amount of time will make the person rethink about what he have done but is not that easy, prisoners need professional help. Rehabilitation programs is a great way to make improve in jails. Make then understand why they are there and how they can become a better person in life and be productive in society. Rideau says that” Prison has a role in public safety…and its use should also be limited to what it does best.” Basically what Rideau saying is that they should not have life imprisonment or execution Crime keep going up and economy is going down if the government don’t make adjustment jails will get full and they will need to make more jails and that means more money from the state instead of help prisoners with rehabilitation and make them a better person.

While structural format is very important to the men in prison, so is the emotional impact. Prisoners are still human and the emotional impact is a serious part of why they are in that place. Poverty, lack of education, lack of opportunity are parts of what can make people ended up in prison. I agree with Rideau when he say that “The most dangerous criminal is the one who has not yet killed but has a history of escalating offenses. He's the one to watch.” In other words Rideau believe that criminals that starts stealing from people then stores and then banks are the one who we need to ne fear about because as we can see he starts just assaulting people but with the time his plan are getting bigger. One of my friends that went to high school with me start the same way just stealing cellphone from other students and selling it on the streets. He got bored with the time or maybe it wasn’t enough money so he starts to go into clubs and steal woman purses. Two years later he had his own crew and he was stealing money from stores they caught him and now is on jail for 7 years. According to Rideau believe, my friend follow the same path of escalating offenses. We
