Why is cloud computing important for today’s companies?

Nowadays, the polemical cloud computing is being developed as one of the most important parts of new technologies. This is why we chose cloud computing as topic for this paper.

During the assignment, we will answer how far cloud computing is safe, and the consequences of sending all the informatics system including personal information to the cloud. So, is our privacy being attacked?

What is cloud computing?

Cloud computing means sending all the informatics system (servers, storages, software, apps, e-mails, intranet,) through virtualization. In other words, cloud computing means having all the informatics system on the Internet.

The first person to talk about cloud computing was George Gilder in 2006. He described this idea as: “the PC’s desk is dead”. The cloud allows the company to use it like a platform where you can find software and apps (SAAS, software as a service). On the other hand, we can use it as a platform where you can develop your own software (SAAP, software as a platform). Finally you can use it as storage (SAAI, software as an infrastructure).

Kinds of clouds

1. Private cloud. The cloud is property of the company. Why is this kind of cloud interesting for companies? Mainly because this cloud is totally controlled by them. Because of that, companies know where their data is; they can control the access to the cloud and customize the services of the cloud.

2. Public cloud. The cloud is property of a company which sells the services of the cloud to its clients (for example Microsoft, Google, Amazon). In this kind of cloud, you cannot transfer to the cloud all the informatics system. The companies in the cloud decide what you can send to their clouds. Finally, you have to take into account that all the information sent will be property of the clouds owner.

3. Cloud computing: is a service which companies or someone who wants to develop software or apps can hire. In this way, you do not pay when you are using the application of the cloud. You must only pay when the software developed is downloaded.

Reach of the cloud

The first problem of the cloud is the Service Level Agreement (SLA). The cloud is only available a 99% which means that one week per year companies will not have their informatics systems available.

The second problem is that the cloud’s companies do not say where data are. Regarding data protection law, we have to take into account that there is no company in the cloud business that observes the law. And why? We are going to explain this by exemplifying it with the two most important companies in this business.

First of all, we are going to speak about Microsoft. Microsoft uses keywords in your data in order to collaborate with police, terrorism, child abuse … but Google says “Data is yours, but if Google finds something interesting
