Death Penalty vs. Life in Prison
Over the years, there has been great controversy over the punishment criminals should receive in consequence of their actions. Many of them are easy to punish, but those that threaten or terminate a human life a rather hard. Giving them a death penalty or life in prison are the two options the judge could take to punish such criminals. Criminals just laugh at the system because they think with either way they win. Both of the penalties given to the criminal are considered death sentences; the only difference is that one is more brutal than the other. Instead of putting the criminals to accumulate and to rot in jail, giving them the death penalty would not only save up space for other criminals but it would eradicate a potential danger for society for good.
Many might argue that “there is no credible evidence that the death penalty deters crime” but there are many facts ignored by this statement. First of all, there is nothing that people fear more than death. Once the criminals witness what could happen to them, logically speaking, they would hold themselves back. This would not only lower criminal rates but there would be more space in jails. There have been testimonies of victims arguing that the murderer of one of their family members is living better than them. With the life in prison penalty, the criminals are given three meals a day, a place to practice sports, work out, a place to sleep, and access to television. In a sort of speak, they are basically getting rewarded with commodities they didn’t have outside prison.
As soon as the death penalty gets implemented in many places, society is going to stir up. On the negative side, any people will strike on the streets arguing for “less murder” and human rights or even criminal rights might rise just to challenge the system. On the other hand, people might see the justice being done by the system. Criminals would stop their mocking of the system and won’t get a better life in prison than the one they have being free. The victim families would feel justice being done and not have on their heads that the responsible of hindering one of their family members is lingering out somewhere living in prison with many commodities.
