Thaknsgiving Day

The First American Holiday

When the English settlers arrived in what is now the United States, they brought their traditional holidays like Christmas with them. The first holiday to originate in America was Thanksgiving.

Thanksgiving was first celebrated in Plymouth Colony in 1621 by the Pilgrims, English settlers who sailed to America on the Mayflower in search of religious freedom. When the Pilgrims arrived in the New World, it was winter. Food was scarce and the possibility of starvation was great. However, the new settlers were able to struggle through the cold winter months and in the spring, with the help of the Indians, they planted corn, squash and other vegetables discovered in America.

The first harvest was better than expected and the Pilgrims were extremely thankful. To celebrate and to thank the Indians for their help and friendship, there was a feast. This celebration became a tradition and now every year on the fourth Thursday in November, people throughout the United States celebrate Thanksgiving.

On Thanksgiving the whole family gathers for a traditional dinner of roast turkey and stuffing, cranberry sauce, a variety of vegetables usually including squash and sweet potatoes and pumpkin and mincemeat pie. And in the true spirit of Thanksgiving, friends who live alone are always invited to join a family on this special day of thanks.
