Mia is a very gifted cellist. She has everything she could ever want, a loving family, an adoring boyfriend, an amazing best friend, and an amazing career ahead of her in music. All of that changes suddenly. Mia and her family have a terrible car accident and Mia is rushed to the ICU. Mia is caught between life and death, and watches as family and friends come to visit her at the hospital she is in. Soon Mia realizes that she must make the most critical decision of her life - wake up to live a life more difficult than she ever could have imagined, or slip away and die

Mia is a seventeen year old cellist who has so much ahead of her. She loves her family, boyfriend, and best friend, and they all love her back. She is a quiet individual who prefers to keep to herself.

While she was in the car with her family they got into an accident which caused Mia to fall into a coma. Throughout the time that she is in the coma, her feelings towards he boyfriend change drastically. Mia is a dynamic character because in the beginning of the book she was deeply in love with her boyfriend, and near the end she wasn't so sure if she still felt the same way. She was confused because she wasn't sure where their relationship was heading. She wanted to go to New York to attend Julliard, whereas Adam wanted to stay in Oregon, and she was afraid that the distance would eventually drive them apart.
