IMPORTANCE OF ETHICS FOR SOCIETY
Ethics in the professional practice, is the base for a better society; Without discriminating any profession, the code of ethics of any discipline is an essential tool for the proper development of the professional activity, since it guarantees the quality in the execution of the professional activity, through the use of the lineaments established by the Corresponding regulatory entities, based on the values of responsibility, respect, equity, honesty.
Formulated and evaluated by the man from the beginning of philosophical thought in ancient Greece, the concept of ethics has become a parameter that governs any type of action inherent to the human being. "From its origins among the philosophers of ancient Greece, Ethics is a type of normative knowledge, that is, a knowledge that aims to guide the actions of human beings" (Cortina & Martínez, 2008, p.9). Thus, ethics becomes a discipline with moral foundations, which seeks to ensure the right action of the man in his day to day, respecting his fellow man and the environment.
Today, sustainable development is a concept that has taken a lot of force worldwide, since it is evident the great environmental deterioration generated by the man with his actions, and it becomes necessary the regulation for the preservation of Natural resources, and ensure the survival of the man on earth. Generating awareness in people is a generalized initiative of governments and private organizations worldwide, seeking to improve the relationship between the man and nature, and contribute to the improvement and construction of society. This preoccupation of the man by his behavior, in recent times, carried to create codes of ethics for professionals of the different disciplines, which contemplate so much the social as environmental subject, in order to avoid conducts that violates the safety, integrity or morals of others, or against the preservation of the environment.
Although there are hundreds of professions worldwide, and each one is governed by its corresponding code of ethics, the general tendency of those documents is based on the same principles or values. For the particular case of project management, its code of ethics is based on responsibility, respect, fairness and honesty; Responsibility in making decisions, respecting the established norms. Respect for people and their security, and respect for natural resources. Equity and impartiality in decision making, honesty and sincerity in communications and behavior.
Nevertheless, in spite of the efforts in the different professional associations looking for continuous improvement, and the honorable and integral behavior of their professionals, newspaper from all over the world share articles day to day about professionals who have acted reprehensibly, and caused human loss, large-scale pollution, failure of large companies that generated jobs in their region, or the embezzlement of public funds that should be directed to social works and never arrived.
In the particular case of our country, unfortunately this is the daily bread; Contractors who leave unfinished works of vital importance for the improvement of the quality of life of a community, public servants who steal the treasury destined to education, or medical care, and worse, one of the most aberrant cases that happens in Guajira, where there are people who are vulnerable in the middle of the desert, without a drinking water service and adequate food, and because of this, children die every day for malnutrition because the resources that the government has allocated to combat this problem, are deflected by local politics without any scruples or remorse for their compatriots, and who only care about their private well-being.
