Objective:

Know about the objectives and applications that the Fairtrade Foundation program have.

Procedure:

1. Open blackboard facility and check what is has to be done for this activity.

2. Read about the objectives and requirements of the Fairtrade foundation.

3. Read the article “Five goals for a Fairtrade Town , city or zone”.

4. Write a small paragraph of the reasons to support or oppose the Fairtrade initiative according to the role card con page 171-172.

5. Write down a conclusion and final thoughts.

Results:

• What are the objectives of the Fairtrade Foundation?

The objective of Fairtrade Foundation is to provide and facilitate certain market the opportunity to grow and enable disadvantaged producers from poor countries to sell to traders and retailers, it contributes to sustainable development by offering better trading conditions to, and securing the right of, marginalized producers and workers.

How can towns participate in Fairtrade programs?

There are certain objectives a location must have in order to became a Fairtrade Town, these include:

1. The local council must pass a resolution supporting Fairtrade.

2. A range of Fairtrade products must be available in the area shops and served in various establishments.

3. Fairtrade products must be used by a number of local work places and organizations.

4. The council must attract popular support for the campaign.

5. A local Fairtrade steering group must be convened to ensure the continuity of the commitment to the Fairtrade Town status.

Your town council has set up a meeting to decide whether to apply for Fairtrade status.

Sometimes retailers don´t listen what us, the consumers, have to say, at these times we demand better products, good quality at a reasonable price, but this is no always what we get, retailers keep up selling us products of low quality at higher prices. The Fairtrade Foundation could bring us the solution in regard to the balance of the state if the local market.

What we know so far about the Fairtrade program is that it might help with the balance of the products offered in the market, giving us quantity and quality to choose from. We also know that this initiative is growing around the world, so this means that it’s producing beneficial outcomes for consumers, producers and retailers alike.

We also have taken in mind that the Fairtrade products must have to be present in establishments in the area, which would be a problem if there were a lot of competition, but since there’s not, this initiative gives a chance to the local market to grow in terms on quantity of market options and quality.
