Michael Phelps is an american swimmer who has set the record of winning the most medals in Olympic history. In fact, there were 28 medals(23 gold, 3 silver and 2 bronze.) at 5 olympic games
. He was born in Baltimore in June of 1985 and he is the youngest of three children. He started swimming because of her sisters´ influence, he found in the pool a way to escape of their parents fightings who were divorce later. At the age of 7 he was still scared top ut his head under the water so he floated around on his instructors´ back. He began to dream of becoming a champion after the Atlanta summer games in 1996.
He started his career at the Loyola High School pool but then, he met his coach, Bob Bowman, at the North Baltimore Aquatic club. Bowman recognized Phleps talent so they started to train together.
His first Olympics were at the age of 15 and he became the youngest american male swimmer to compete al Olympics. He didn´t win a medal on those Olympics at Sidney.
In 2001 he becamen the fisrt youngest american male swimmer to set a world record. (200 meter butterfly)But then he broke his own record in Japan, winning his first international medal.
In 2002, he set a new world record at the US Summer Nationals in FordLauderdale for the 400 meter indivivual medley and other US records in some other categories. The next year he broke his own world record.
At the age of 17 he set five new world records and in 2004 he broke his own record again in 400 meter individual medley(4:08:41)
2004-he became a superstar at the Olympic Games in Athens beacuse he won 8 medals and set lots of records.
He was arrested because of driving under de influence of alcohol and high speed.
2012-London he won 4 gold medals. medal count increased to 22.
He holds the record of the most gold medals won in one olympic(8 medals in Beijing)
He anounced his retirement in 2012 after London olympics. But then in 2014 he decided to compete at the Mesa Grand Prix Arizona and his participaction at the Pan Pacific Championship were amazing but then he was arrested in Baltimore because of driving under alcochol influence, speeding and crossing double lines. This created a discussion and made him apologize with all his fans because of the bad actions he did. This was not good for the aanouncement of coming out of the retirement.
He anounced he was coming out of the retirement in 2014.
In the Olympics in Rio he won one silver and five gold medals becoming the oldest individual gold medalist in Olympic swimming history.
At the same time he became the first swimmer to win four consecutive gold medals in the same event, 200 meter individual medley.
Phelps clinched his 19th Olympic gold medal in Rio when he swam an impressive second leg of the men's 400 freestyle relay. On August 9, Phelps made history again when he won gold in both the 200-meter butterfly
