The Earth
The official name is “Earth”, but the other name is “Blue Planet”. The Earth is the third planet from the sun, and it is the fifth largest in size.
The Earth is the only planet that has “Water”. The Earth has 70% water and30% land
The Earth’s Atmosphere is made from water vapor, which helps controls, the temperature in different areas.
The Earth’s Structure
The Earth has several layers; the layers are called “the Crust”. The Earth’s Crust is made of “Tectonic Plates”, where our continents and oceans rest on.
Many changes can be called part of the “Rock Cycle”.
Motions of the Earth
The Earth is never still. It is forever moving around the sun as well as rotating on its axis. The normal things from our daily life, like night and day or the changing seasons, are due to this movement.
Rotation
The Earth spins on its axis from west to east, thanks for this rotation our day has 24 hours, and we have day and night.
Revolution
Not only the Earth rotating on its axis, it is also revolving around the sun. The part we follow around the sun iscalled “Earth’s Orbit”.
Leap year
Every four years there is one day added to February to compensate the time. This is called a “Leap Year”
Seasons
The Earth’s axis isn´t straight. The seasons are a direct influence on how direct the sun is shining onto the planet. This is also why in some places of the earth, according to the seasons, some days are longer or shorter.
Summer
Summer is the time when the Earth is in such a position that light is shining directly on us. During this time the days are longer and the weather is warmer.
Winter
When in some place is summer in the other side of the Earth’s orbit is Winter, the winter make the days shorter and colder.
Other Motions
The Sun and its planet are moving towards another star called “Vega”. Both our Sun and Vega are rotating of the Milky Way Galaxy.
Nutation
Nutation is a small regularity in the precession of the equinoxes.
