PRONUNCIATION OF THE –ED ENDING IN THE PAST SIMPLE
To pronounce the –ed ending in the Past Simple, there are three rules:
1. If a verb ends –d or –t, the ending –ed sounds like one more syllable, that is /Id/.
visit → visited /'vIzItId/ add → added /ædId/
wait → waited /weItId/ include → included /Inklu:dId/
repeat → repeated /rI'pi:tId/ need → needed /ni:dId/
2. If a verb ends in a voiceless sound (/p/, /k/, /f/, /ʃ/, /ʧ/, /s/, /θ/, /ks/), the –ed ending is pronounced /t/.
ask → asked /ɑ:skt/ practice → practiced /'præktIst/
like → liked /laIkt/ pass → passed /pɑ:st/
watch → watched /wɒtʃt/ finish → finished /'fInIʃt/
laugh → laughed /lɑ:ft/ wash → washed /wɒʃt/
help → helped /helpt/ fix → fixed /fIkst/
3. If a verb ends in a voiced sound (/b/, /g/, /v/, /ʒ/, /ʤ/, /z/, /ð/, /l/, /m/, /n/, /r/) or a vowel sound, the –ed ending is pronounced /d/.
