Ideology that defends the superiority of one race over the other and the need to keep it isolated or separated from the rest within a community or a country. "Racism can even justify the physical elimination of the breeds considered inferior" The first article of the international convention on the elimination of all forms of racial discrimination (1965) defines racism as: Any distinction, exclusion, restriction or preference based on race, color, descent or national or ethnic origin, which has the purpose or effect of nullifying or impairing the recognition, enjoyment or exercise in conditions of equality, human rights and fundamental freedoms in the political, economic, social, cultural or any other field of public life.

Racism is also related to other concepts with which sometimes is often confused, as ethnocentrism, caste systems, the classism, colonialism and machismo. International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination on International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination is celebrated on March 21 of each year. That day, in 1960, the police opened fire and killed 69 people in a peaceful demonstration against the "pass laws" of apartheid which was performed in Sharpeville, South Africa. In proclaiming the Day in 1966, the General Assembly urged the international community to redouble its efforts to eliminate all forms of racial discrimination (Resolution 2142 (XXI) )33 Since then, the system of apartheid in South Africa has been dismantled. Racist laws and practices have been abolished in many countries, and has built an international framework to combat racism, guided by the International Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Racial Discrimination.
