No freedom til we are equal in rights «Illegal Immigration»
Krogstad & Passel (2015) have shown that “there are 11.3 million unauthorized immigrants in the United States in 2014” (para. 3). In addition, from the beginning, the United States of America was populated by immigrants. Therefore, it is one of the most ethnically diverse and multicultural nations in the world. Moreover, it is essential to know the reasons why illegal immigrants are important for the country. First, immigration is a natural right of human being. Second, they also pay taxes and the majority of them are law-abiding. Finally, they are a key part of the economy. Therefore, Illegal immigrants should be allowed to apply for work permits or a “path citizenship” because they are a vital part of the country; they must not be deported.
Immigration is a natural right of human being. As The Universal Declaration of Human Rights says its article 13 “Everyone has the right to freedom of movement and residence within the borders of each state. Everyone has the right to leave any country, including his own, and to return to his country” (The United Nations, 2015, n.p.). Thus, countries do not have to close its borders, instead of that they must be allowed if any person wants to leave its own country and moves to live and work in another. Even the president Barack Obama (2014) recently said that we are and always will be a nation of immigrants. We were strangers once, too. And whether our forebears were strangers who crossed the Atlantic, or the Pacific, or the Rio Grande, we are here only because this country welcomed them in, and taught them that to be an American is about something more than what we look like, or what our last names are, or how we worship. What makes us Americans is our shared commitment to an ideal -– that all of us are created equal, and all of us have the chance to make of our lives what we will (n.p). Therefore, if they had the opportunity, why illegal immigrants cannot have the same chance. Unauthorized immigrants must not be deported. Instead of that, they have to have a legal status, pay taxes and obey the law. Nowadays immigration is a need and not a crime.
Illegal immigrants already pay taxes and most of them are law-abiding. Krayewski (2013) has reported that “in 2006 an estimated 8 million illegal –up to two thirds of the total- paid taxes, including both income taxes and Medicare and Social Security taxes” (para. 4). Despite they pay taxes, they do not receive benefits and do not apply for many government services due their illegal status. In the same year, “revenue from unauthorized immigrants was estimated at $11 billion to Social Security alone” (Krayewski, 2013, para. 4). Therefore, if they pay taxes, they deserve an opportunity to apply to a legal status. Armando Matamoros declared recently that when he receives his check each fifteen days, he realizes that the government takes Employee Medicare tax, Federal Income Tax, Social Security Employee Tax and VA State Tax from his check (A. Matamoros, telephone communication, October 17, 2015). Despite he is an illegal immigrant; he pays all these taxes without any benefit. Moreover, a person who purchases something in the country “pays sales taxes” regardless “their immigration status”. “More illegal immigrants would pay taxes if they did not think about deportation as a consequence of paying taxes” (Krayewski, 2013, para. 4). Another important point is illegal immigrants “are law-abiding” (Krayewski, 2013, para. 5). They always try to obey the law because they want to stay in the country in order to work and have a better life. It is important to consider these facts and let unauthorized immigrants live in the country. They do not deserve being deported.
