President Carlos Salinas de Gortari , the result of some very controversial elections . Acceleration of neoliberal policy.

*1989

Falling coffee prices .

*1992

Amendments to Article 27 of the Constitution , concerning land reform. The reform meant a weakening of the system of ejidos and communal land . Demonstrations against the V Centenary Celebration

*1994

*1 January

Entry into force of the Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA ) between the U.S., Canada and Mexico .

Zapatista armed uprising : the EZLN in Chiapas occupies several cities , including: San Cristobal de las Casas , Las Margaritas, Altamirano , Ocosingo . Through the First Declaration of the Lacandon Jungle , declares war on the federal government and its army, and demand freedom, justice and democracy for all Mexicans.

*March 23

Murder of Luis Donaldo Colosio, the PRI candidate for the presidency of the Republic , in Tijuana, Baja California. The EZLN declared a red alert and suspends the consultation process .

*December 13 , 1997

In Guadalajara ( Mexico ) “El Niño” causes the only recorded snowfall in 116 years ( the first was in 1881).

Seventeen days before being killed Colosio , at the foot of the Monument to the Revolution, gave a speech in which he spoke of the true transformation of Mexico .

In this unfortunate and tragic March 19 have passed. Despite this lapse , can rescue some concepts which today become very core of what is happening in Mexico today :

1 - " We do not understand the change as an indiscriminate rejection ( PRI ) to what others did ."

2 - " Mexico does not want political adventures , not to bungee jumping , not to setbacks schemes that were already in power and proved ineffective . Mexico requires democracy but rejects her perversion is demagoguery. "

3 - " Reforming the means to make the administration of justice system independent instance of high respectability and certainty between the institutions of the Republic."

4 - " ... We do not want candidates who, to be nominated , the most surprised to know about his alleged membership in the Party, the PRI are themselves."

5 - "I see a Mexico in which farmers do not get the answers they deserve. I saw a depleted field and in debt ... "

6 - "I see a Mexico with hunger and thirst for righteousness . A Mexico of people injured by the distortions imposed by the law who should serve them , women and men afflicted with abuse of authority , or arrogance in government offices ... "

7 - "I see a young Mexico faced the difficult daily reality of the lack of jobs , do not always have to reach the best ways to prepare and education. Young people are often driven to crime and drug abuse.
