WHAT GOVERNANCE SYSTEM FACILITATES SUSTAINABLE AND INCLUSIVE DEVELOPMENT?
In my opinion, democracy is the governance system that facilitates sustainable and inclusive development. But before to start, we need to know what exactly it is. The word democracy comes from two of Greek’s words: “Demos, that means people; and Kratos, that means authority or power”. So democracy allows people to be heard through their representatives.
There are so many studies made about the development of a country, and the results are always that countries that have a good democracy are the most developed countries; some of them are Norway, Australia, Switzerland or U.S.A.
Viewing that, democracy allows people to contribute with them ideas, and not just for the government. So the country will keep developing in terms of health, industry or education, because they can compare opinions and vote for the best. Trough using referendums and polls, a country is able to see which are the needs of its people and which are the points that are most developed and which the less.
But why democracy is the governance system that facilitates most development? Well, we can take another type of governance system, like dictatorship, and see that development is impossible. In a dictatorship country, there is only one person who basically decides everything that he or she wants without consulting anything to the people. He makes the laws for his own benefit and wellness, and not looking for everyone in the country. So the country is negatively affected because development goes on the background and the own benefit of the richest people goes on first line.
In conclusion, without democracy is so hard to have development, but if there is no development, democracy becomes more fragile.
