Once, I was in class. I don't remember well what was the teacher talking about until I suddenly felt the teacher's menacing look over me. I immediately came back to myself as I tried not to look guilty. Well, yes, he found out I was cynically falling asleep in his class.
After several minutes of feeling embarrassed and still kind of sleepy, he asked me why I was so tired. It was all narrowed down by the words “I slept late”. It was in that moment when I realised that I wasn’t the only one. The lack of sleep can have many causes and serious consequences.
Why do teenagers go to sleep so late? One of the main reasons is the fact that we have a lot of stuff to do in order that we end up having very little time to rest.
For example, when we are in the exams’ period, our sleeping time may reduce between 10 and 30 percent of our usual sleeping time. If we’re not in exams’ period, we have homework for more than three subjects.
Well, some people don't have much trouble with that. But what happens with the people who have afterschool activities?
Sometimes their activities last one hour, but some other times they last even from three to five hours! If we had expected to sleep eight hours, we would have had to go straight up to sleep without doing any homework. Which means that if you want to do your homework, you’ll probably got to sleep late.
Also, teenagers go to sleep late not only because of homework, but because they spend their time watching TV or using other electronic devices. It becomes a problem when they do not feel the time passing by until everyone at home is asleep and they look at the clock indicating it’s 2:00 a.m. already.
Besides having homework and spending time on electronic devices, one of the most common reasons is that teenagers can suffer from insomnia. It can be caused by being stressed out or maybe because they feel anxious.
All of this causes can generate consequences that can affect the teenagers' productivity. Some of these causes are that they can wake up late and, as a result, arrive late to school and probably they’ll fall asleep during class too.
Also, the lack of sleep can make you feel tired all day long, but most importantly, it makes you lack of concentration which is very harmful for the academic and personal live.
We have to find a way to end with the teenagers' situation of sleeping late. Organising our time can help us have a better night of sleep.
Sleeping late can have terrible consequences which we can prevent by organising our tine in the best way possible.
We deserve our eight hours of sleep!
