Located in the Tehuacán-Cuicatlán biosphere reserve, Puebla, Zapotitlán Salinas unveiled the ancient wisdom that your community takes advantage of the natural resources of the place. Know it! In this desert territory, of singular beauty, dominated by cacti, are some of the salt mines that already the ancient settlers exploited.
HISTORY
The population was founded by indigenous Mixtec and popolocas in pre-Hispanic times, during the years 1550-1560. For much of its history, the town was dedicated to the exploitation of the natural salt in the Valley of Zapotitlán, originated due to the salinity of the bed of the Zapotitlán River or Salado. In the vicinity of this village are located these salinas and the vestiges of the city of Cutha, one of the major urban centres of the lower Mixteca poblana during the formative Mesoamerican superior.Clima
Weather
The Valley of Zapotitlán Salinas has a climate that is dry or arid, warm, with a marked period of rains in the summer. The dry climate of this region is due mainly to the moisture-laden wind currents that come from the Gulf of Mexico hit the mountains of the Sierra Madre Oriental, dropping all the rain in areas of the East of the mountain side, and passing to the other side in the form of dry winds. Thus, only a fraction of this rain passes into the Valley of Zapotitlán, generating the semi-arid climate that characterizes it.
