QUESTION FOR ASSESSMENT I
(EC 205) Fall 2016
- We often see the existence of inefficient political institutions across the globe that often delay or even retard economic development. (a) Describe such an inefficient political institution and delineate how its existence lowers economic development. (b) Describe the set of factors that ensure the persistence of this inefficient political institution – be it political, cultural or any other reason that seems to be at work.
(c) Can you think of any feasible way in which you would help break the political deadlock and catalyse economic reform?
[Describe any political institution that you have not studied in class or come across in any of the readings discussed in class or mentioned on the syllabus. The inefficient political institution can be something innocuous and may be related to your community, neighbourhood or city – it does not have to be at the country level.]
- Consider the set of developing countries for which you have data available in something such as the World Development Indicators (WDI) for the past 35 plus years.
- For this set of countries, present a table that identifies the set of countries where there have been episodes of high positive economic growth (greater than x percent for x years) or negative economic growth (negative economic growth over a 5 year period).
- Select a random subset of ten countries from the set of developing countries and show (on a separate graph for each country that represents economic growth on the y-axis and time on the x-axis) when there is political turnover. Briefly summarize whether you observe any pattern.
