The national symbols of the State of Zulia are also known as “State Symbols” and are the flag, the coat of arms and the State Anthem.
Flag of the State of Zulia
The Flag is the main insignia of the Zulia State, it was decreed on January 23, 1991.
This flag consists of 2 colors (Blue and black) and in the center it has the image of a sun and lightning.
Blue Color: The blue color in the upper strip of the flag represents hydrography, the gulfs, rivers and the imposing bridge over Lake Maracaibo (Capital of the Zulia state).
Black Color: The lower black stripe of the Zulia State Flag represents the oil present in said region, since Maracaibo is home to the oil basin of Lake Maracaibo and this, in turn, represents Zulia's wealth and the great contribution made by its soils to the country's economy; Since oil is the fundamental basis of the Venezuelan economy.
Sun: The sun present on the flag of the state of Zulia mainly represents the high temperatures with which its inhabitants live every day. In addition, it represents the union of the sun with agriculture, mining and livestock with a great sense of belonging and human quality.
Lightning: The lightning bolt on the Zulia state flag represents the “Catatumbo Lightning”. They are extremely strong discharges of thunder and lightning without pause, an event that occurs around the basin of Lake Maracaibo.
Coat of arms of the State of Zulia
The shield of the Zulia State is made up of 3 quarters with the colors of the Venezuelan flag.
The upper left quarter is yellow and contains a tower that refers to the participation and struggle of its inhabitants during the war of independence. Since, thanks to the San Carlos castle and the Zapara fort, they were able to better monitor and guard the entrance to the country through Lake Maracaibo.
On the other hand, the upper right quarter is red with a yellow ray in the middle that represents wisdom and education.
Finally, the lower quarter is blue and in the middle of it we can see a white ship that seems to be sailing in the sea. This represents the river capacity that the Zulia state has and, therefore, is synonymous with pride for its inhabitants.
Furthermore, on the left side of the shield we find a palm leaf that represents the glory of the heroes of independence, and on the right side, we find a banana leaf, which represents the fertility of their lands.

The state of Zulia did not have a regional anthem until 1909. It is for this reason that, during that year, contests were opened to find lyrics and music that were a symbol of Zulia representation.
