Are you proud of what Puerto Rico is today? Do you feel that the government is working into encouraging our culture? Have you considered independence as a political status? Do you understand what independence is? In simple words, being independent is when people are ruling themselves. Within independence, people’s nationality and culture are clearly defined.

Our country has suffered, many times, oppression, identity crisis and the feeling of a vulnerable economy thanks to our government. We are set to think that the United States is what’s best and whatever they do is right. Well, it is not. It’s time for a change, in the government and in our ideals. Puerto Rico should consider the independence as a possible solution to its problems.

There should be no doubt that the political sovereignty will let us achieve more as a country, economically and socially. However, people are afraid of independence because they compare the possible results with other countries that have economic problems or political dictatorships. But what people don’t know is that they didn’t have the advantage we have right now. These countries got their independence without the political and economic modernization we Puerto Ricans have today.

Puerto Rico can’t do economic transactions with other countries, since our relationship with the United States doesn’t allow it, even if it could be better for our nation. Already independent, we are going to be able to expand the capital and the foreign market, while we promote the local business. For example, under the USA government, the cabotage laws let us trade using only US-made ships. Under independence, we could use cheaper ships for the transportation of merchandise. This would reduce the cost up to 40% and would allow us to compete with the American market and promoting it.

Through all this time, our country has been taught to be afraid of our freedom and our chance to be a free nation. Our culture has mixed with the American. We celebrate more their traditions and celebrations, than our own. Independence promotes the nation’s pride and consolidates the cultural identity. When we separate completely from the United States, then we´ll feel completely in control of our culture. We will have the power over education, by teaching more about our history; and communications, monitoring the message we want the people to hear; all which help move Puerto Rico towards what we think is best. The women and man of this free nation will have the duty to maintain and work in our identity as a free republic.

Independence is the best among other political forms. Our country can live with the idea that they made the right choice; we will be capable of our own political, social and economic decisions. Well reassure our cultural identity and go through the political change with pride, because well achieve a major progress. With the independence we, as a country, could achieve our maximum potential
