WAR AND HIGH INFLATION WILL WEIGH ON WORLD GROWTH IN 2022[pic 2]

After the rebound in global economic activity in 2021 generated by the massive vaccination campaign against Covid-19 in most countries, 2022 looked set to be the year in which such growth would continue to rise or remain at relatively stable levels.

However, no one was counting on the fact that, from the beginning of the year, two problems would emerge that to this day have no end in sight in the short term: Russia's military invasion of Ukraine and high inflation worldwide, which led to aggressive monetary tightening by most central banks. In this context, growth forecasts for most economies were significantly reduced by agencies such as the International Monetary Fund (IMF) and the World Bank (WB).

In its January 2022 economic outlook report, the IMF already considered negative factors such as the advance of the new variant of Covid-19, Omicron, and a slight increase in inflation, for which reason they projected a growth in the Gross Domestic Product (GDP) of the global economy of 4.4% for that year.

Regarding the most important economies, at that time they estimated a GDP expansion of 4.4% for the world; the United States 4.0%; the Euro Zone 3.9%; China 4.8%; Germany 3.8%; Japan 3.3% and the United Kingdom 4.7%. However, as the months passed these figures became increasingly difficult to achieve. In its current estimates, the IMF projects that the world grew 3.4% last year and will expand 2.9% in 2023.

COMMENTARY

1.SINOPSIS

The European economy was hit hard by Russia's gas cut-off; energy and food prices hit record highs. 2022 looked set to be the year in which such growth would continue to rise or remain at relatively stable levels.

However, no one was counting on the fact that, from the beginning of the year, two problems would emerge that do not seem to have an end in the short term: The Russian military invasion of Ukraine and high inflation worldwide, which would unleash a global imbalance, reflected in economic rates, inflation and GDP.

On the other hand, also how certain factors can leave a historical footprint and a great impact on a global level, in the case of the costs and severe restrictions that these countries are facing to survive.

2.OPINIÓN 

Lesli: Con respecto a lo anterior, es bastante interesante cómo la pandemia del Covid-19 llevo a que con ella ciertas problemáticas como lo es la inflación y las problemáticas financieras llevará a un desequilibrio en diversos sectores que conllevaría bastante tiempo poder dar un avance positivo, al saber que todo el mundo estaba teniendo sus crisis por el virus antes mencionado, dio origen a otras problemáticas como fue el corte de gas por parte de Rusia que provocó un acontecimiento histórico por su alta tasa de inflación, al igual que Rusia, muchos otros países tuvieron la misma situación, llevándonos hasta la fecha a una reedificación de la economía. Este tipo de casos nos llevan a pensar que a pesar de que cada país rige y tiene sus propias políticas, siempre serán dependientes entre sí, ya que, si un país es afectado, los demás pasan a la mima situación por los elementos que los mantienen unidos.

Saul: Desde mi punto de vista todos los acontecimientos antes, durante y después de la pandemia marcan un cambio de planes en la economía de todos los países, si bien algunos países tuvieron consecuencias peores que otros, todos nos vimos afectados de cierta manera. Cambiando de tema pero no muy lejano de lo antes mencionado llegamos a la guerra entre Rusia y Ucrania, la cual ha afectado económicamente al continente Europeo y como un efecto dominó la economía de otros países, tanto para mal como para bien. Realmente estos últimos años no han sido como se esperaban, hay altos niveles de inflación, pobreza, escasez, etc sin embargo cada país lucha por sobresalir uno del otro.
