IMPORTANCE OF THE WATER
ARE YOU DRINKING ENOUGH?
General Purpose: To persuade
Specific Purpose: To persuade more people to drink more pure water.
Central Idea: To inform more people on the health benefits of drinking more.
Introduction
I. Attention Material
A. Did you know that the human body is made up of over 70% water?
1. In the U.S. the majority of adults live is chronically dehydrated
2. Drinking coffee, sodas, teas, juices are not the same as drinking pure water.
3. In fact drinking coffee, sodas, and teas actually have a diuretic effect
Further dehydrating us.
4. You are already mildly dehydrated when you realize your thirst.
5. Have you ever noticed how little water if any, older people drink?
6. This is because they have, over their life time, gradually misinterpreted the “thirst signal” as a hunger signal.
7. This misinterpretation can also lead to “obesity” because your ingesting calories you may not need. Even dry foods contain a small % of water and if you eat enough your thirst may temporarily be satisfied, especially if you ingest a fruit or a vegetable, but your chronic dehydration will continue.
II. Orienting Material
1. Water is used in all cells, organs and tissues to help regulate body temperature and maintain all of the body’s functions.
2. Our bodies lose water every day through breathing, sweating, and digestion, making it important to stay hydrated by drinking plenty of pure water and eating foods with high water content such as fruits and vegetables.
3. Our skin, for an average 200lb. man, contains over 2 gallons of water! Meaning, staying hydrated will not only support better health but will support better outside health evident in the condition of your skin.
4. Chronic Dehydration can be overcome by drinking pure water throughout the day, especially when you are not thirsty. Drink at least 2-3 liters of pure water every day.
BODY
1. Chronic Dehydration is widespread in the United States, especially in the adult and elderly population.
2. This occurs as I mentioned earlier because as we get on with our busy lives, work and always on the go, we simply forget to ingest water. We drink only when we are thirsty.. the problem is when we are thirsty we are already dehydrated. When we finally drink fluids its usually not pure water so thirst is temporarily satisfied but chronic dehydration emerges and now becomes a condition you live in. So, now you drink only when you are thirsty. The key to eliminate “chronic dehydration” is to drink regularly, even when you are not thirsty. We need to avoid the thirst signal.
