Euthanasia refers to the practice of intentionally ending a life in order to relieve pain and suffering caused by an incurable illness, that stop the life cycle and body processes.
Euthanasia is categorized in different ways, which include voluntary, non-voluntary, or involuntary. Voluntary euthanasia is legal in some countries. Non-voluntary euthanasia is illegal in all countries. Involuntary euthanasia is usually considered a murder. However, there are different euthanasia laws in each country. Also, euthanasia may be classified into passive and active. Passive euthanasia consist in stop common treatments, such as antibiotics, necessary for the continuance of life. Active euthanasia consist in provide to the patients some drugs like morphine, that relieve the pain and cause a slow death.
The subject of euthanasia is a highly controversial topic, with a lot of moral, social, legal and religious concerns and discussions. A main group against euthanasia is the religious: Mainly the Christianity considered euthanasia as a way of suicide and as a sin. Also, according to them, only God decides when the life finish.
Euthanasia is a legal debate, too. The decriminalization of euthanasia does not mean an obligation law, so that, the right must specify some requirements for the patients and the medical body that attends the case. However, some courts have not approved the laws that allow euthanasia, for example in Bolivia, the euthanasia still been illegal and penalized.
On the other hand, the medical body and some courts agree with euthanasia. The medical body must respect the autonomy of the patients, but, in some cases, the doctor is who decides when the treatments does not works and when may be stopped, causing the dead of the patient. This is considered as a way of passive euthanasia. Also, the doctors agree with active euthanasia and they usually are responsible for providing the drugs necessaries for this process.
Moreover, some courts agree with euthanasia, are involved with important decisions to approve laws that allow this practice. As an example are the Dutch tribunals, which have approved all the laws that makes the euthanasia completely legal. Also, the euthanasia is “legal” in some European countries, nevertheless, there are still decrees and laws that difficult the process of legalization of euthanasia.
From my point of view, the euthanasia is a better choice for patients who does not endure treatments like a chemotherapy, and their disease is very advanced, also for their families. I think that people, disagree with this practice, also in this complicated cases, because they are not in the patient’s body and can’t feel their pain and suffering, but, for the patient, the truth is something completely different.
In conclusion, the euthanasia is a controversial topic that is not finished yet. We have to see it objectively and respect the other people decisions, because this
