Generic competences:
4. Listens, interprets, and emits pertinent messages in different situations using mediums, codes, and appropriate tools.
5. Develops innovations and proposes solutions from established methods.
Flame Test
A) The effect of the light over valance electrons is called Photoelectric effect and it is the observation that many metals emit electrons when light shines upon them.
B) What is an emission spectrum?
Emission spectrum is the kind of light a particular metal emits.
We expect to see these flame colors in relation to these different elements
Na (Sodium) Bright Orange
Ca (Calcium) Deep Orange
Sr (Strontium) Red orange
K (Potassium) Glow purple-red
Li (Lithium) Solid red
Cu (Copper) Bluish red
Procedure Experimental:
When we join a metal with the handle for the burner, the handle heats and emits a color depending on which is the metal, for each metal has different color. With this technique ensure that the molecules to emit light, according to the energy characteristics of the structure with a force proportional to the concentration of the sample intensity. This method provides very sensitive quantitative results in some molecules.
1. We have to put a little bit of a metal and observe what happens to put it above the burner in the flame and see the color it emits.
2. We need use other handle each time that we´ll change the metal.
3. Write the different colors observed depending of the metal used.
Results:
Li (Lithium) Carmine red
Na (Sodium) Strong persistent orange
K (Potassium) Lilac-pink
Rb (Rubidium) Red (reddish-violet)
Cs (Cesium) Blue-Violet
Ca (Calcium) Orange-red
Sr (Strontium) Strong red
Ba (Barium) Pale green
Cu (Copper) Blue-green
Pb (Lead) Greyish-white
Elements which emit color to the flame
Element unknown Color Element
A Green-blue Copper
B Orange-yellow Sodium
C Lilac Potassium
Conclusion
I like too much this experiment, because is very interesting and is so striking to see the flames and the curiosity to know why this happens and how I can performance the experiment and identify each metal and which color emits and how the flame changes its color in each case according with the metal.
