The ozone layer is the natural barrier that is formed all around the Earth. It is located between the troposphere and the stratosphere, which is around ten or fifty kilometers above the Earth’s surface. This layer is conformed by the accumulation of this gas called ozone, it represents a little quantity of the gases and is very rare in the atmosphere, around three molecules of ozone are found for every ten million molecules of air, but the 90% of if it located in the stratosphere forming this protective layer. This gas is produced when the oxygen ascends to the atmosphere and the ultra violet radiation transforms it into ozone gas. It is also known as a greenhouse gas which helps in the contribution of the Earth’s climate.
National Oceanic and atmospheric Administration (NOAA) researchers, spend many years in the study of this layer, mainly ESRL (Earth System Research Laboratory) which is a division of NOAA are making laboratories, and computer systems to study deeply this issue. They are also constructing and expanding word wide, instruments that helps to measure and control the ozone gases in the atmosphere, and are also used to gather atmospheric information to see and detect regional ozone changes through time and examine the ozone distribution.
The ozone layer was taken more in consideration, when scientists and people realize, that many chemicals where damaging the layer which protects us from many factors, and that without it, the whole planet would have a big unbalanced situation that may affect the three sustainability aspects. Because of this discovery and international treaty was invented and signed in 1973, named the Montreal Protocol that implied the reduction of this manufactured chemicals.
