The story about how I lost the opportunity to study abroad is still very frustrating to remember, especially because it could’ve all been avoided if only, I’d been a little extra careful. It all started when I was in my first year of college, I had just moved to an apartment near my campus, in a very safe neighborhood, at least that is what my landlord reassured me with. At the time I had been participating in the process of getting a scholarship to study in Dallas, Texas for one semester as an exchange student. It was all going so far so good, and I was in the final stages of my application, the only thing left to do was sending an essay about my personal interest for pursing the scholarship. The deadline for this essay was very close, but I was confident because all I had to do was send the finished essay via email and that would be all. Little did I know, I was about to undergo the most stressful time of my life.

On the morning of the day it all went down, I realized I had misplaced the keys to my apartment. Because I was running a little late to class, I figured I could just leave my door unlocked and look for my keys later that day. When I got to class, it was my understanding that my home and all my belongings would be safe and sound. Sadly, I was mistaken. Later that evening, I opened the door to my apartment and realized it had been broken into! All of my things were all over the place; my kitchen drawers were all open, my coffee table was upside down, and my bedroom floor was covered with all of the clothes I stored in the closet. But the most devastating news for me was that my laptop, and the essay I needed to send that very afternoon, were nowhere to be found.

After assessing what had been stolen and calming down, I decided to call the police and fill out a report for breaking and entering. The police called my landlord to access the security cameras around the apartment complex, apparently the thieves entered my apartment just a few minutes after I left it opened. They tried to break in next-door, but I made myself the easiest target by leaving my door unlocked. The most infuriating detail of this story is that the only time I left my apartment unlocked was the time I got robbed. Long story short, the police assured me that they would look around the neighborhood to find the identities of the thieves and punish them, but weeks passed by, and no one was found responsible for my stolen belongings.

I wasn’t able to restore my essay and I lost my place in the list of candidates for the scholarship. That day I learned my lesson, from that day on I never leave my apartment unlocked, and always back up any important documents. On the other hand, I think that breaking and entering should not be something happening to anyone, but more importantly, I think people that take advantage of others to make a living should spend time in jail, where they can hopefully change and become better members of society.
