CRIME IN ECUADOR

The panorama of crime and insecurity in Ecuador has increased after the pandemic that began in 2020. Many people from different social classes began to have economic crises in their homes. The country began to reactivate economically, after the pandemic, thanks to the different activities that they offered for free to integrate small businesses. However, many people didn’t find a decent way of living. This became a factor that led to crime out of necessity. The most common types of crime in Ecuador are: robberies, drugs selling, and hitman.

In 2020 according to figures from the government ministry, from January to August 2020 there were 12,475 robberies while in 2021 there were 16,017 robberies. In other words, crime increased by 28.4%. Robberies, are recorded throughout Ecuador, totally ignoring the places that were once considered less risky. However, the national police together with the president of the republic will devise a national security plan through curfews, which decreased considerably by 40%.

Despite the insistence of the national police, the sale of drugs continues to be a serious problem. So far, the borders remain closed for the passage of trucks and personnel returning from countries with a high rate of drug sales. Internally, several gangs dedicated to the sale of drugs continue to manage the sale of illegal drugs. The increasing of drug selling leads to the increasing of the number of lives lost and decreasing the number of tourist visits in public places.

In Ecuador, there are different crimes, and the most common are murders by hitman. In addition, this type of crime continues in the present and it has increased. Nevertheless, violence like hitman has been increasing over time since the citizens were and they are still victims of it.  Nowadays, hitman has occurred in places like gym, grocery store, construction, banks, etc. The reason can oscillate into gang initiation rituals, robbery or debt.

In conclusion, crimes in Ecuador have been increasing due to the various social problems as property after the pandemic in 2020. There is a huge concern with the security and the laws of the country. Therefore, it is necessary for the government to make some recommendations to avoid being victims of crime. To avoid these problems from homes is important to care and educate children how doesn’t feel the need to be part of the problem.
