“…We still have judgement here, that we but teach
Bloody instruction, which, being taught, return
To plague th’ inventor. This even-handed justice
Commends th’ ingredience of our poisoned chalice
To our own lips. He is here in double trust:
…
…I have no spur
To prick the sides of my intent, but only
Vaulting ambition, which o’erleaps itself
And falls on the other—”
Macbeth, Act I, scene 7, page 365, lines 8-28
Macbeth as all Shakeperean tragic heroe, has a tragic flaw, in his case: Ambition. In the quote above, he talks about the internal conflict he has, which is if killing the king of Scotland or not. After making reference to the good job that the king is making, he said ‘’Bloody instructions (…) to the plague inventor’’; with this he demonstrate how afraid he is of all the bad things that can come back to ‘’haunt’’ him if he kills the king. At the end, he recognizes that the only reason for killing the king was, as we know, his tragic flaw: Vaulting ambition.
