April Fools’ Day

Puddleton is a small village. There is one street in Puddleton. The people of Puddleton are sleeping and the villages have similar doors and similar windows. There are gardens in front of the houses. The people of Puddleton are sleeping, but one man is not sleeping. He is working in his garden. His name is Joe Selby.

Dialogo

Nosey works at Chalk Farm. He is not often late for work, but he is late today. He can see his friends Andy Carpe and Alf Plunkett.

Dialogo.

The people of Puddleton have heard the news. The men have not gone to work, but they are not sick. They are digging in their gardens. They are digging oil-wells.

The women of Puddleton have come to Hawkins’ General Store. It is two o’clock in the afternoon. The women are talking about Joe Selby’s garden. They are talking about oil.

Dialogo.

It is four o’clock in the afternoon. The men are still digging for oil. They have deep holes in their gardens. Nosey is not in his garden. He has stopped work.

Dialogo.

The people of Puddleton are in the street. They are near Joe’s house, so they are very quiet. Joe is standing beside the hole. There is a hill of earth in the garden. Joe is locking at it and smiling.

Dialogo.

Suddenly the front door opens Monica Selby comes out. She is walking very slowly.

Dialogo.

The people are going home. They have holes in their gardens but they are laughing (lafin). The people have gone home. They are going to fill up, their holes to. They know Joe’s secret now.

Nosey: Good morning Joe. Are you busy?

Joe: Yes, I’m very busy.

Nosey: What are you doing?

Joe: I’ll tell you. Nosey, but don’t tell your friends. Do you promise?

Nosey: I promise Joe

Joe: There’s oil in this village, and I’m going to find it.

Nosey: I won’t tell my friends Joe. Goodbye

Joe: Goodbye Nosey.

Alf: Good morning Nosey. Is there any news today?

Nosey: Yes, there is. Tells them about the oil.

Andy: Oil? Is true?

Nosey: Yes, but don’t tell your friends

Andy: I’ll go and see. Will you come with me Alf?

Andy: Hello Joe. You’re busy this morning. What are you doing?

Joe: I’m digging a hole.

Alf: Why are you digging the hole Joe.

Joe: I’ll tell you. But don’t tell your friends. We promise? There’s oil in Puddleton and I’m going to find it.

Andy: We must go now Joe. Were late for work.

Alf: Goodbye Joe

Joe: Goodbye.

Andy: Alf I can’t go to the farm today. I don’t often feel sick, but I feel sick now. I must go home.

Alf: I feel sick too. I must go home too.

Bessie: Where is Mr. Hawkins today?

Doris: Don’t tell you friends. It’s a secret. He’s in the garden and he’s digging a hole.

Bessie : That’s not a secret. Doris my husband is digging a hole in the garden too.

Miss Clamp: I want a spade please.

Doris: I had some spades this morning, but I haven’t any spades now

Miss Clamp: look in the windows.

Doris: What will you do with that spade Nora?

Miss Clamp: That’s my business.

Doris: Are you going to dig a hole in your garden?

Miss Clamp: Yes, I’m going to plant a tree. My husband’s planting a tree.

Nosey: Hello Joe, have you found any oil?

Joe: I’m not looking for oil Nosey. Listen Nosey. This is a secret, but I’m not looking for oil. That was a joke. I’ve murdered my wife. I’m going to bury her in this hole tonight.

Nosey: You murdered?

Joe: Be quiet. I’m going to bury her tonight, but don’t tell your friends

Nosey: No Joe, I promise. Good bye Joe.
