WHEN MARIAN SANG
This story is about Marian and her beautiful voice, she is an awesome girl that sang in the churches of Philadelphia.
When Her father died the tragedy filled Marian’s heart and sometimes her songs.
Her mother was happy for Marian’s success.
When she was 18 years old, she went to a music school and waited in the line for an application but nobody help he, the girl on the counter said “We don’t take colored: and she knew about preduice.
Her mother told her that there would be another way to accomplish what would have been done at that school and she took voice lessons, continued with the choirs, and sometimes performed at Negro churches and colleges.
She saw a tragic opera Madame Butterfly, she thought how wonderful it could be to sing on a grand stage, act out a dramatic role, and wear beautiful costumes but that dream seemed too far away to reach.
In her twenties, Marian was invited to many states to sing, when she traveled by train she were seated in the dirty and crowded reserved for Negroes.
In the audiences there were two: one white and one black.
She didn’t get hotel room because she was Negro, but no matter what humiliations she endured, Marian sang her heart with dignity.
With help of her friends, she was granted an audition whit the fierce yet famous Mr. Boghetti, but he said he didn’t have time or room for new students…. But Mr Goghetti listed Marian and he saild…”I will make room for you right away”
She worked so hard with Mr. Boghetti her recitals now included other languages troubled her, but she was desided to learn and October 1927 she went to France. .
Marian studied and was invited to perform in concert halls in Norway, Sweden, Finland, and Denmark. The newspaper in Swede called it “Marian fever”
Mr. Boguetti had been right. She could go anywhere and sing for anyone.
Howard University tried to reserve a concert and a Consitution Hall, but they want it because of their white performers only policy. Then they want to reserve a large high school auditorium, but they were denied.
Finally with the Roosevelt’s approval, The United States government invited Marian to sing on the steps of the Lincoln Memorial on Easter Sunday. About 75.000 people were in the river, Marian’s sister were there and her mother too. She close her eyes and sang, the people pleaded for more.
For almost 16 years Marian sang for kings and queens, presidents and prime ministers, famous composers and conductors.
She received metals, awards and honorary degrees for her magnificent voice.
