Racism In Frozen

See, as a person, you can choose to ‘forgive’ older stories for their racism, sexism and/or homophobia. So you can read Dracula and its freaking sexist mysoginist bullshit, take a deep breath and remind yourself that it’s OLD and it’s not like you can write a letter to Bram Stoker about it.
However? That slight forgiveness that older works get, when you, as a reader, give it a slight excuse by the ‘it was the era mindset’?
DOES NOT APPLY TO CONTEMPRARY TIMES.
So if a book set prior 1950, written by someone in the 1950’s, chooses to use ‘they were dark’ and they used it as a reference to the hair, it gets an iffy pass.
Someone in this time using that same phrase? IT’S BULLSHIT.
So it’s bullshit to say that because the story ‘was meant’ to be set in fictional whitey mcwhite fantasy land everyone should be white. IT’S A FICTIONAL KINGDOM. And the ones writing the story? They were writing it in the XXIst century, not the XIX one.
Frozen IS racist. It’s not violently racist, but it’s the type of racism we POC confront every single day. It’s a microagression that keeps freaking telling us that we do not belong, that we do not exist except to be in the background.
It’s racist the same way that Harry Potter is homophobic. Not by violence, but by erasure. And you know? Most days, most series, POC and queer people WILL go on and ignore and even enjoy series that do not depict them at all. But it gets tiring.
And eventually, you just have to say enough.
