The Treaty of Versailles was justifiable at the time. How far do you agree with this statement? Explain your answer
To begin with, the Treaty was acceptable to the people of Britain and France. After the loss of so many lives there was a desire of revenge particularly in France. British people wanted to see the Kaiser brought to trial and hanged. The majority of the people in Germany thought it was fair, since it was not harsh enough. A more generous treaty would have been totally unacceptable to public opinion in Britain and France. Moreover Germany had already agreed too many of the terms in the armistice. The terms of the treaty were not entire unexpected. When the armistice was signed the Germans agreed to reductions in their armed forces, losses of territory and the principle of reparations. They should not have been surprised when this was included in the Treaty. Finally, the Treaty could have been harsher, since many people felt that the Germans were themselves operating a double standard. Their complains for the treatment did not fix with the harsh they had treated Russia. Indeed Germans might have imposed even harsher terms on the allies if they had won the war.
On the other hand, the Treaty was unjustifiable since they blamed the wrong people, the treaty was unfair because in punished the people of Germany rather those responsible. Moreover reparations hurt ordinary Germans who were not guilty. In addition, it was wrong to put the sole blame on Germany as other countries had followed aggressive imperialism, and that was one of the causes of the war. We can say that the treaty led another war since the treaties were so harsh and were likely to lead future war. As a consequence of the harsh Germans will set about seeking revenge.
To conclude, I agreed with the idea that the Treaty of Versailles was since justifiable Treaty could be harsher since the settlement took limited amount of lands. Also the and the military restrictions didn´t affect them so much since her army continued to be powerful.
