TOK unit plan Sense Perception
Course and topic | Sense Perception | Timing of unit | DP year 1, |
Unit description and texts | DP assessment(s) related to unit | ||
Students will become aware that sense perception as a way of knowing is the source of much of our personal and shared knowledge. They will reflect on the characteristics of sense perception, such as, variability and active selection. They will learn that the world is not always as we “sense” it. Therefore, we do not know how it “really is”. They will learn that our sense interpret reality | Students were tested on the filters of perception and optical illusions. It was a summative test. They performed well. (S) |
INQUIRY: establishing purpose of the unit
Transfer goals List here one to three big, overarching, long-term goals for this unit. Transfer goals are the major goals that ask students to “transfer”, or apply, their knowledge, skills, and concepts at the end of the unit under new/different circumstances, and on their own without scaffolding from the teacher. |
Students will learn that sense perception is a way of knowing use in our quest for gaining knowledge. They will learn how the filters of perception affect our understanding of the world They will learn that our senses have advantages as well as limitations. They will learn that our senses can be enhanced by using technology. They will become aware that sense perception is the bedrock of empiricism. They will learn that sense perception is very important in the natural sciences and in the arts. |
Essential understandings List here the key content/skills/concepts that students will know/develop by the end of the unit. |
Students will know the following content: Sense perception as a way of knowing. The advantages and limitations of sense perception The filters of perception and our understanding of the world. They will learn about optical illusions Sense perception alone cannot produce knowledge. They will learn how to analyse and create optical illusions using the Gestalt theory. They will learn how to learn about the world using sense perception Sense perception is the bedrock of empiricism Perception is intimately connected with the natural sciences and the arts. |
Missed concepts/misunderstandings List here likely misunderstandings students may have during the unit with relation to skills, content and concepts. |
Content-based: They may not get that sense perception can be enhanced by technology. Skills-based: They may have some trouble I understanding that perception is selective. Concept-based: They may have trouble understanding the filters of perception. |
Inquiry questions List here the understandings above written in question form, preferably as ones that inspire students to answer them. Feel free to create additional questions that help inspire further inquiry in the unit but may not directly connect to an above essential understanding. |
Why is sense perception as a way of knowing? What are the advantages and limitations of sense perception? How do the filters of perception act in our understanding of the world? What are optical illusions? Can sense perception alone produce knowledge? How can we analyse and create optical illusions using the Gestalt theory? Why is sense perception the bedrock of empiricism? How is perception connected with the natural sciences and the arts? |
ACTION: teaching and learning through inquiry

Students will know the following content: Sense perception as a way of knowing. The advantages and limitations of sense perception The filters of perception and our understanding of the world. They will learn about optical illusions Students will develop the following skills: Sense perception alone cannot produce knowledge. They will learn how to analyse and create optical illusions using the Gestalt theory. They will learn how to learn about the world using sense perception | Content-based: They will play a game using their sense. (F) They will reflect on the advantages and disadvantages of sense perception as a way of knowing. (F) They will play with some cards on optical illusions (F) Skills-based: They will evaluate how they learn about the world using several ways of knowing that support sense perception. (F) They will analyse some optical illusions in small collaborative groups. (F) They will reflect on the role of the filters of sense perception (S) |
