ABOUT CHRISTMAS ISLAND
HISTORY and Geography
The island is mainly tropical rainforest, of which 63% is national park land.
The island was named by Captain William Mynors on Christmas Day in 1643.
It’s An Australian Territory, it’s not a country, but its considerate by many people as a ‘country’ because it has it own culture.
ECONOMY:
The main economic activities on Christmas Island are the mining of low grade phosphate, limited tourism, the provision of government services and more recently the operation of the Immigration Detention Centre. The government sector includes administration, health, education, policing, customs, quarantine and defence.
POLITICS.
The head government that is and administrator is Jon Stanhope, Christmas island politic system is based on a hereditary monarchy
CULTURE

PEOPLE
The diversity of the settlers, native tongues and cultures has influenced the island's own culture . Today most residents are Chinese followed by Australian / Europeans and Malay.
LANGUAGE:
Though English is the official language there are many residents who generally communicate in Malay or one of the four Chinese dialects, because many residents still converse in their native tongue.
RELIGIONS:
Religious tolerance is evident from the number of Chinese temples-Buddhist, Taoist, Confucian and others as well as a Christian church, Muslim Mosque and a Baha'i Centre.
FOOD:
The cultural diversity of Christmas Island is reflected in the variety of its food.

Christmas Island is surrounded by a narrow tropical reef which plunges into a bottomless abyss. This makes it the perfect destination for scuba diving trips! This reef is laced with many unspoiled corals and abundant species of marine life This unique marine environment is waiting to be explored. Christmas Island boasts some of the best scuba diving trips in Australia and has some of the longest drop-offs in the world.

Christmas island red crabs. Are the most representative things in the island.Not all red crabs are red. There are the occasional orange ones and the rare purple crabs.At the first rains of the wet season (December) about 120 million crabs come out of hiding and start heading towards the ocean.
