R: Annemarie Johansen

R: Use the context of World War II as a way to clearly highlight these difficulties. The novel focuses on Annemarie Johansen's personal experiences growing up, but her experiences are common to most young people. Growing up is presented as a struggle for identity. Does Annemarie belong to the world of adults or the world of children? Those distinctions are always difficult to make, but the situations war creates make them even more difficult. The roles Annemarie must play blur the line between the responsibilities of a child and the responsibilities of an adult.

1. ¿Hay un tono infantil en la novela? ¿Si la respuesta es sí, cómo podemos identificarlo?

R: Yes, the reality of war is sometimes so terrible and strange that it seems unreal. Annemarie sometimes has a hard time accepting the events of the war as real. She fictionalizes them, turning the war into a fairy tale reality. At other times, fairy tales are contrasted with war. For example, Annemarie says that everything has changed except the fairy tales. Fairy tales are also used to show that Annemarie is leaving her childhood behind. Kirsti loves stories about kings and queens, but Annemarie doesn't care about them. She even wants to correct her sister's overactive imagination at times. However, despite herself, Annemarie finds support in the world of fiction.
