Carlos Slim Helu (Mexico City, January 28, 1940) is a Mexican businessman and philanthropist of Lebanese origin, considered by Forbes magazine as the wealthiest person in the world between 2010 and 2013.
Carlos Slim activity has diversified into various sectors. In 1997 bought shares of Apple Inc., just before the release of the iMac, which managed to multiply his fortuna.4
In 1997 it acquired Prodigy, a U.S. Internet provider. Carlos Slim was able to make this company a powerful server of various Internet services to achieve a partnership with MSN, launching a Spanish-language website of the hand with Microsoft. This, soon after, became pointer site in Mexico.
The September 10, 2008 bought 6.4% of U.S. newspaper The New York Times, that is 9.1 million shares, worth about $ 123 million. According to Slim, this is a movement and not a strictly financial strategy to enter the world of the American media. With this shareholding became the third largest shareholder in the company after the Ochs-Sulzberger family, who have maintained a controlling interest in the Times since 1898, and the hedge fund Harbinger Capital Partners.
