This experiment was performed to find
out if the different brands of soda
can drinks have a higher density or
lower density than water. The
experiment was done to compare the
difference in densities between regular
Coke and Diet Coke.
The hypothesis is the regular and diet sodas will both sink in water.
In the chart is showed some comparisons in the characteristics of the different sodas.

The hypothesis is the regular and diet sodas will both sink in water.
Procedure
Fill the aquarium with water almost to the top.
Place a can of regular soda in water. This sinks.
Now place the diet soda in water. This doesn’t sink.
Why it works?
Cans of soda have exactly the same
volume and size. A regular soda is
sweetened with sugar, while a diet uses
any artificial sweeteners like
aspartame, you need only a few
grams to sweetena can of diet soda.
The difference in the amount of
sweeteners dissolved leads to a
difference in density: while regular
soda cans tend to be denser than
water and sinks, diet soft drink cans
are generally less dense than water
and float.
