TOEIC BRIDGE

• The TOEIC Bridge is a lower level of the TOEIC exam.

• It is perfect for students who want to show that their English has improved from basic to intermediate level.

• Students who want to change from a Student Visitor Visa to a General Student Visa may be able to show that their English is good enough to return to the UK on a General Student Visa

• The test takes about one hour

• There are two sections, listening (about 25 minutes) and reading (about 35 minutes).

• You can read more about the TOEIC Bridge test here.

The TOEIC® Bridge test

The TOEIC® Bridge test measures proficiency in English listening and reading at beginner to intermediate levels.

The TOEIC® Bridge test is an assessment tool very similar to the TOEIC® test, except that it measures competence in listening to and reading English at beginner to intermediate levels. It is a reliable and valid assessment that is internationally recognised.

Use of the Bridge test:

• For professionals who require a rudimentary knowledge of English at their workplace

• As part of training programmes in companies, to both assess and encourage beginners to set and attain language learning goals

• For students who are in the first stage of a language course

• In secondary schools and technical schools as an external and impartial tool to measure language skills

• As a developmental tool that can be administered a number of times to assess the progress of the candidate in English language learning

• As a tool to measure instructional effectiveness – the scores of all students pursuing a particular language course can be examined to analyse the quality of the course itself.

The Bridge test has proved to be a good motivational tool to encourage beginners to proceed to the next level.

Structure of the test

The Bridge paper and pencil multiple-choice test consists of 100 questions. It lasts less than an hour, and features questions that are significantly easier than TOEIC® test questions.

Section 1: Oral comprehension (with audio support), with questions based on

• Photographs

• Questions and answer modules

• Short dialogues

This section has 50 questions, and takes 25 minutes to complete.

Section 2: Written comprehension, including

• Incomplete sentence

• Reading comprehension

This section has 50 questions, and can be completed in 35 minutes.

The score report given to each candidate indicates a total score graded between 20 and 180 points (10 to 90 points for each of the two sections of the test).

Listening test.

In the Listening test, you will be asked to demonstrate how well you understand spoken English. The entire Listening test will last approximately 45 minutes.

There are four parts, and directions are given for each part. You must mark your answers on the separate answer sheet. You can't write your answers anywhere else.

Part 1 - Photographs

Directions:

For each question in this part, you will hear four statements about a picture on the screen. When you hear the statements, you must select the one statement that best describes what you see in the picture. Then find the number of the question on the answer sheet and mark your answer. The statements will not be shown on the screen and will only be spoken once.

Look at the example on the screen.

Now listen to the four statements.

(A) He's taking off his glasses.

(B) One of the men is wearing a tie.

(C) They're going into the model house.

(D) She's talking on her cell phone.

Statement (B) One of the men is wearing a tie, is the best description of the picture, so you should select (B) and mark it on the answer sheet.

1.

(A) She's reading a newspaper.

(B) The woman is pushing the wheelchair.

(C) She's looking in her suitcase.

(D) Her handbag is open.

The woman's handbag is open (D). She is not reading a newspaper, but the man in the top left of the photograph is (A). She is sitting in a wheelchair, but not pushing it (B). It is a handbag which she is looking in, not a suitcase (C).

Part 2 - Question-Response

Directions:

You will hear a question or statement and three responses spoken in English. They will not be shown on the screen and will be spoken only one time. Select the best response to the question or statement and mark the letter (A), (B) or (C) on the answer sheet.

Example - You will hear:

How long does it take to drive to the airport?

You will also hear:

(A) His plane's been delayed by an hour.

(B) It's about 10 miles out of town.

(C) About forty minutes out of rush hour.

The best response to the question How long does it take to drive to the airport? is choice (C), About forty minutes out of rush hour, so (C) is the correct answer. You should mark (C) on the answer sheet.

11. Would you mind if I left the meeting early because I have a dentist's appointment at 4?

(A) No, that's fine. I'll let you know what happens.

(B) She's had a bad toothache all afternoon.

(C) The meeting's finishing at 5.30 today.

This question is a very polite request and (A) responds correctly. (B) is connected to the dentist, but gives an explanation why someone is in pain. (C) gives information about the time the meeting finishes, but this is not the question which is asked.

Part 3 - Conversations

Directions:

You will hear some conversations between two people. You will be asked to answer three questions about what the speakers say in each conversation. Select the best response to each question and mark the letter (A), (B), (C) or (D) on the answer sheet.

The conversations will not be shown on the screen and will be spoken only one time.

Questions 41 - 43 refer to the following conversation:

(Man) Welcome to SunJet's executive check-in desk. Are you flying first or business class today, Madam?

(Woman) I'm in business class on the 10:50 flight to Chicago. Here's my passport and reservation number.

(Man) Thank you, madam. If you have any suitcases for the hold, could you put them on the belt, please?
