Types of Paragraphs

Descriptive Paragraph

Descriptive: A descriptive paragraph uses details of sight, sounds, touch, taste, or smell to give the reader the sense of what it would be like to “be there”; describes how a person/thing looks or feels. In descriptive paragraphs, you can describe people, places, objects, or events. The main purpose is to create an image in reader’s minds. In short, it is a kind of painting with the words.

MODEL PARAGRAPH

MY FRIEND MARILYN

My best friend Marilyn is a very nice girl whom I have known for ten years. One of the reasons why I like her so much is that she has such a nice appearance. She has beautiful long blonde hair and she has a nice haircut, too. Her big blue eyes are like a deep ocean. With her physical appearance, she looks like a movie star. Also, the freckles on her face make her so cute. They remind me of my aunt who passed away a few years ago. Secondly, I like her character a lot. She is a fair-minded person who treats everyone with equal respect. Furthermore, she is very calm and she can keep her temper in the most difficult situations. Lastly, she has some interesting hobbies and interests. She spends a lot of time working in the garden. She really likes planting different kinds of flowers or plants. In addition to this, she is fond of travelling. Although she is so young, she has already visited ten countries so far and she likes bringing souvenirs from these countries. As you can see, there are so many reasons why I like her so much. I hope we will be friends forever.

USING ADJECTIVES

A descriptive paragraph cannot be thought without adjectives. Most writers use variety of adjectives in order to make their writing more interesting. Thus, readers can have a clearer picture of what is being described.

Informative Paragraph

Informative: An informative paragraph is simply a paragraph that provides the reader with information. It is similar to a research paper. The only difference is that an informative paragraph is a lot shorter than a research paper. When it comes to how to write an informative paragraph, you just need to pick a topic you like and do a lot of research on it. This will help you write an interesting paper.

Example:

Dolphins

Dolphins are marine mammals closely related to whales and porpoises. There are almost forty species of dolphin in 17 genera. They vary in size from 1.2 m (4 ft) and 40 kg (90 lbs) (Maui's dolphin), up to 9.5 m (30 ft) and 10 tonnes (9.8 long tons; 11 short tons) (the orca or killer whale). They are found worldwide, mostly in the shallower seas of the continental shelves, and are carnivores, eating mostly fish and squid. The family Delphinidae is the largest in the Cetacean order, and evolved relatively recently, about ten million years ago, during the Miocene. Dolphins are among the most intelligent animals, and their often friendly appearance, an artifact of the "smile" of their mouth line, and seemingly playful attitude have made them very popular in human culture. Scientists have found that dolphins call each other by distinctive whistles as humans use names. Every dolphin only responds to the unique whistle related to each of the dolphins.

Persuasive Paragraphs

Persuasive: a paragraph is part of a letter or essay that is written with the aim of persuading someone to do something for you. This type of letter is mostly written when someone has an issue and would like for it to be addressed. When writing this, one should have good reasons why their suggestions should be implemented.

Persuasion means to convince someone that your opinion on a subject is the right one. There are many forms of persuasion; you might not even know you are being persuaded. For example advertisements are persuading you to buy a certain product. Or family is always trying to convince you to do something or that they are always right.

It is important to consider the audience as your write persuasively. Directing your paragraph toward a particular audience can be helpful. Consider what kind of evidence this audience would respond to. When you take your audience into consideration, you will make your persuasive paragraph more convincing.

Methods of Persuasion:

• Facts- A statement of what is.

• Referring to authority- An expert who can be relied on to give unbiased facts and information.

• Examples- An example should clearly relate to the argument and should be typical enough to support it.

• Predicting the consequence- Helps the reader visualize what will occur if something does or does not happen.

• Answering the opposition- Answering possible critics shows you are aware of the opposing opinion and are able to respond to it.

Laughter is the Medicine

Laughter is one of the greatest healing devices known to man. Laughter is powerful and can help people in many different ways. It has the power to cure something as little as a bad day or to heal the wounds of a terminally ill person. Laughing has helped create the smile which is the universal sign of well being. Generally, individuals who do not laugh live miserably and have unhappy lives. Dr. Robert Holden found out that smiling and laughing releases endorphins in the brain which gives people a overall happy well being. In many clinics laughter is being used in replacing anti depressants and reduces
