TRAFFICKING IN MEXICO
According to the United Nations Office for Drug Control and Crime Prevention (UNODC ) and the Trafficking in Persons Report of the State Department of the United States of America, Mexico is listed as a source, transit , and destination for trafficking in persons for the purposes of commercial sexual exploitation and forced labor . Groups considered most vulnerable to human trafficking in Mexico include women and children , indigenous persons, and undocumented migrants.
According to the government , more than 20,000 Mexican children are victims of sexual exploitation caused by trafficking every year, especially in border and tourist areas. Most victims are treated in the foreign country , especially for commercial sexual exploitation are coming from Central America, particularly Guatemala , Honduras , and El Salvador , most for traffic on the way to the United States and , to a degree inferior , Canada and Western Europe.
Another problem is child sex tourism, which continues to grow in Mexico , especially in areas such as Acapulco and Cancun , and northern border cities such as Tijuana and Ciudad Juarez. Foreign tourists often come to the United States, Canada , and Western Europe.
According to the diagnosis ( Human Trafficking Assessment Tool) conducted by the American Bar Association ( ABA) , made in Mexico , have been detected 47 gangs engaged in trafficking for sexual and labor people , we also documented that states with the greatest risk of committed this crime in Mexico City , Baja California, Chiapas , Chihuahua , Guerrero , Oaxaca , Tlaxcala and Quintana Roo.
In Mexico from 2005 to 2008 have been detected over 300 cases of trafficking. It is known that 22 were foreigners and were supported by the National Migration Institute ( NMI ) to regulate their stay in the country as victims of trafficking.
Regarding the legislative exercise was enacted in 2007 , the Act to Prevent and Punish Trafficking in Persons and its regulation at the federal level , published in February 2009 . Also in 2009, twenty-two Mexican states and the Federal District enacted reforms to its penal code that criminalize some forms of trafficking in persons, and only Mexico City and Chiapas have specific laws on the subject.
In regard to the prosecution of the Special Prosecutor for Crimes of Violence against Women and Trafficking ( FEVIMTRA ) under the Office 2 resulted in criminal charges .
Also autonomous public bodies and non-governmental organizations are taking concrete actions in order to fight crime and assist victims of trafficking.
