Sylvia Likens was an American murder victim. She was tortured to death by Gertrude Baniszewski, Baniszewski's children, and other young people from their neighborhood. Baniszewski, her daughter Paula, her son John, Stephanie and two neighbors (Coy Hubbard and Richard Hobbs) were charged of the crime. Likens' torture and murder was described as "the most terrible crime ever committed in the state of Indiana".
Jennifer and Sylvia Likens were left by 20$ a week to the care of a housewife called Gertrude Baniszewski, an asthmatic lady with six children. Sylvia was a quiet and nice girl who was always helping washing the dishes and do it chores. Her sister Jennifer was also very quiet, and had born with a shy leg, which had been advancing up to coming to very serious trouble. At the begening everything was OK, and the girls seemed to be likely with the all Baniszewski’s sons.
The first sign of the horrible crime that it would happen later was that exactly after seven days when 20 dollars came with a day of delay. Baniszewski took Sylvia and his sister Jennifer to the basement and said to them: " Well, I have taken care of you for one week for nothing. The check of his father has not come ". When Sylvia tried to make clear that surely the money had been late, Gertrude ordered both to inclining on a bed, taking the skirt and underwear off and to flog them with a spade. Due to Jennifer had problems with his leg and she was the little girl, Sylvia proposed to Gertrude to punish her instead of to his small sister. Baniszewski acceded.
From that moment on, Baniszewski and hers children, as well as several teenagers of the neighborhood, started abusing physics and psychologically of Sylvia. At the moment of having dinner, Sylvia generally did not eat she had limited itself to observe how the others were eating. In many occasions, his sister Jenny stealled a bit of bread for her even though she was afraid of Gertrude.
Coy Hubbard, was 15 years old and was the boyfriend of one of the daughters of Gertrude, he turned into one of the Sylvia's worst torments. He was an expert in judo and he enjoyed throwing the girl on the air. In the basement of the Baniszewski there was an old mattress, which it supposed that it would provide to Sylvia a soft landing. Coy generally calculated wrong doing that Sylvia landed against the cement floor.
Once, Sylvia urinated in his bed without realizing. This was because the girl had received so many punishments and kicks between the legs that she had lost completely the control of his bladder.
