Cultural identity
Good afternoon teachers, ladies and gentlemen. Tonight I would like to talk about cultural identity.
Before I start I want to ask you a couple of questions… what is cultural identity to you? Do you feel proud and comfortable with your own culture?
Well, as you know cultural identity is how people can identify themselves with their own culture.
And also it’s the feeling of belonging nationality, social class, Religion, generation, etc
Particularly talking about cultural identity of Peru, it is said that Peru has a lot diversity cultural however most of us don’t have a cultural identity since we prefer things from other cultures or countries. And one of the causes would be the TV programs that we have. So instead of transmitting Tv Shows like “ESTO ES GUERRA “ or “COMBATE” , it’s better to broadcast documentaries or educational programs in order to know more about our Peruvian culture , traditions , costumes, languages, etc
Example, instead of listening to rock, electronic music or whatever, we should listen to Peruvian music like “criolla” music or folk music
Another example is that some teenagers try to imitate how foreign people act. I mean they do the same thing like FOREIGN PEOPLE DO such us ways of wearing clothes, acquisition of products made of in other countries! That means that we are losing identity.
In other words, It is said that another cause in some way could be globalization because it is has effects on our culture and it has been taking over for hundreds of years!
As you can see. The lack of cultural identity is a big problem in our country so the first thing that we have to do to overcome this problem is be conscious and identify yourself with our culture.
Cultural identities are influenced by several different factors such as religion, ancestry, skin color, language, class, education, profession, skill, family and political attitudes. These factors contribute to the development of our identity:
You know Peru is rich in natural resources. In addition, Peru is a country which has many cultures and races so there is a reason to be very proud of being a Peruvian.
It doesn’t matter what you look like, where you come from, or what culture you belong to, after all we are the same. We are all human beings.
In conclusion it is important to have a cultural identity because it permits us to preserve OUR CULTURE
Language:
Language is fundamental to cultural identity.
For this reason, it is important that people keep their own language alive.
Peru is a multilingual nation but our official language is Spanish
Traditions:
It is important because by traditions we can transmit our beliefs or values from one generation to another generation in order to preserve our cultural identity
