A dream within a dream

Take this kiss upon the brow!

And, in parting from you now,

Thus much let me avow

You are not wrong, who deem

That my days have been a dream;

Yet if hope has flown away

In a night, or in a day,

In a vision, or in none,

Is it therefore the less gone?  

All that we see or seem

Is but a dream within a dream.

I stand amid the roar

Of a surf-tormented shore,

And I hold within my hand

Grains of the golden sand

How few! yet how they creep

Through my fingers to the deep,

While I weep — while I weep!

O God! Can I not grasp 

Them with a tighter clasp?

O God! can I not save

One from the pitiless wave?

Is all that we see or seem

But a dream within a dream?

Synopsis

A pesar de que muchas explicaciones afirman que este poema hace referencia al desvanecimiento de la vida, del pasado y de la familia de Poe. En esta sinopsis se propone una hipótesis diferente:

El poema se divide en dos estrofas, en las que el sujeto habla por dos: por el que abandona y por el que es abandonado. De eso probablemente trata el poema: de un hombre que abandona a su pareja porque se le acabó el amor de la noche a la mañana. Ella trata de rescatar algo de lo que posiblemente queda, y no lo logra. Podemos suponer que ella en algún momento dijo que sus vidas, arraigadas en su amor, parecían desarrollarse en un sueño. Y él le replica de igual manera: su vida era un sueño, pues todo lo que se vive forma parte de un sueño dentro de otro, que se puede interrumpir de un momento a otro, y despertar en el sueño verdadero. Del mismo modo cuestiona la barrera que separa los sueños y la realidad, preguntándose si tal vez todo lo que percibimos y sentimos no es más que una ilusión dentro de otra. El sujeto, frente al mar, observa como los granos se deslizan entre sus dedos. Esta escena pudiera representar las pérdidas que padeció Edgar Allan Poe, sobre todo la de Virginia Clemm quien fue su gran amor. Y para él su único consuelo es que todo lo que se ve y todo lo que parece forman parte de un sueño dentro de un sueño.

Conclusion

Our understanding of the world and ideas is limited by our experiences and this is perhaps the main factor that determines the subjectivity of a poetic work, although in some cases it is an indeterminate thought that contributes this element to the poetry or the projection of some ideas about others, this work from a personal point of view refers to the last case, it may be the projection of existential questions projected in a situation of detachment, it is this mixture of stormy thoughts that favor the analogies between a situation of separation with another person and the isolation or separation with reality, a reality determined by the prevailing feelings that vanish from the point of view of the author and give rise to a new reality and as is common in human nature we seek to make sense of our reality, preventing cognitive dissonance from making us enter into conflict and reaching a resolute in some cases creating a different reality as the author expresses in a harmonic way
