The antófilos ( Anthophila , gr. 'who loves flowers'), commonly known as bees , are a clade of insects Hymenoptera , no location in taxonomic category within the superfamily Apoidea . It is a lineage monophyletic with over 20,000 known species. 1 The study of the "bees" or clade Anthophila receives Spanish name apidología .
Bees, like ants evolved from wasps. The ancestors of bees were family members Crabronidae and were predators of insects. It may have been the first bees fed pollen covering some of their prey and have gradually begun to feed their young with pollen rather than insects. 1
There are many more species that have not yet been described. They are found on every continent except Antarctica . They are in all habitats where flowering plants (angiosperms or Magnoliophyta). They are adapted to feed on pollen and nectar , using the first primarily as food for the larvae and the second as an energetic material. Best known for all species is the honeybee ( Apis mellifera ), sometimes simply called "bee"; this species is a social insect that lives in swarms consist of three classes of individuals: queen , workers and drones ; however, the majority of species of bees are solitary, ie not swarm. There are also a number of species semisocial with ability to form colonies; eg bumblebees . These colonies do not become so large or durable as the honeybee.
