The Report Spech
Indirect speech , unlike the direct style, do not use the quotes and need not be verbatim. In general, when indirect speech is used, the tense changes. Here you have an explanation of the changes they undergo tenses.
Sometimes "that" is used in the affirmative and negative to introduce what the other person has said phrases. On the other hand, interrogative sentences can be used "if" or "whether”.
Note: Also consider that expressions change over time speech. Notice the change of time in the examples below , and then find a table with more explanations of the changes of time in speech.

Verbal times
There is an important part when moving from direct to indirect style, and tense. Whether they choose tense, indirect speech must bear other:
Estilo directo (Direct Speech) Estilo indirecto (Reported Speech)
Present simple “I eat hamburgers every day.” Past simple He said (that) he ate hamburgers every day.
Present continuous “I am reading a book.” Past Continuous He said (that) he was reading a book.
Past simple “I bought a new laptop.” Past perfect He said (that) he had bought a new laptop.
Past continuous “I was playing tennis at 11 o´clock”. Past Perfect Continuous He said (that) he had been playing tennis at 11 o´clock.
Present Perfect “I have finished my homework.” Past Perfect He said (that) he had finished his homework.
Past Perfect “I had studied English for years.” Past Perfect He said (that) he had studied English for years.
Future (Will) “I will go and buy some food.” Conditional (Would) He said (that) he would go and buy some food.
Future (Going to) “I am going to travel a lot.” Was / were going to He said (that) he was going to travel a lot.
Modal verbs “I can play the piano very well.” I must go home.” He said (that) he could play the piano very well. He said (that) he had to go home.
You must consider how we use tenses are formed. It is advisable to review the formation of the Present Simple, Present Continuous, Past Simple, Past Continuous, Future Simple, Manners.
• Remember that in most cases also change the temporal and locational expressions. Note the following changes.
