“From the journals of Joe Gardner/when he was eighteen:
This is not the end of it, but I have to leave. I have to get the hell out of this place before I go crazy. I have to stop the voices in my head.
From the journals of Joe Gardner/before dinner, his first night back in his hometown:
I’m back. Shit.” (page 104.)
More than 20 years after the disappearance of Patty Glass, Joe Gardner has to return to his abhorred hometown, Colony, because his mother is dying. Since his childhood, he had started to hate his town for many reasons, mainly for his mom, who he considered the biggest bitch/witch that could exist, and for being haunted by the disappearance of Patty. The day Patty disappeared, Joe, Melissa and Hopfrog had looked for her in the abandoned barn. They saw a well in the center, and thought they heard Patty’s voice inside, but it was too dark to see. While being there, they got attacked, by a strange figure made of blood, and heard eerie voices, and after escaping, they made a pact that no one would tell anybody about what happened. This had traumatized Joe, and gave him horrible nightmares, but throughout the years, he had started to forget about, until he returned. In this part of the book, we also learn more about Colony, which terror reigns throughout the children, and some of them also hear voices from the underground.
“The Children’s Hour”, is a greatly written book that will not only scare you to death, but will connect you sentimentally with the characters. This is what happens when Joe comes back to Colony, the most hateful place from his childhood. In this phrase you first understand the reason why Joe left, and in the second one you share his pain as he returns to Colony. But now that he is back, things will only get worse for him, as other children are starting to hear the same voices he heard, and they are thirsty for blood and vengeance.
