The most dangerous game
I found this short story entertaining and at the same time very wise. It makes you meditate about animal cruelty, how we as humans are the only ones responsible for making a sport about their deaths. Even though this book was written a long time ago, it expresses all of what’s wrong about the contemporary society and our indifference towards other living organisms.
At the beginning Rainsford was very skeptical about the feelings of the animals, saying that they didn’t have any or at least nobody cared. When he finds himself in the position of the prey, he experiences all of the suffering and fear involved in portraying the not-so-fun-role, resulting in the change of his disposition about the sport remarkably.
I think that Richard Connell decided to name the book like that because Ranisford consider hunting a game, like a cat chasing a mouse. When Zaroff confronted him, he realized that indeed it is a game, but now his life is at risk. Like the general said “Outdoor chess! And the stake is not without value!”
PD: I have to admit that when I started reading the story it sounded familiar, until I realized it that “The Simpsons” made a burlesque episode about it.
