Pregnancy in adolescents is an issue that requires more education and support to encourage girls to delay motherhood until they are ready.
Adolescence is the period in the life of a person comprising between 10 and 19 years old. In some cases adolescence is interrupted when the girl gets pregnant. According to experts, the most appropriate age to be a mother is between 20 and 35 years old, because the risk to the health of the mother and the child is much lower. The pregnancy in adolescents is considered high risk and carries more complications. The teen is not ready physically or mentally to have a baby and take responsibility of motherhood.
For example the consequences could be:
• An increased number of spontaneous abortions.
• The teenage mothers have children with more health problems and developmental disorders.
• Fear to be rejected socially: one consequence of adolescence and pregnancy is that she feels criticized by people in her environment and tends to be insulated from groups.
• Rejection Baby: are young girls and don´t want to take responsibilities, time and the obligations assumed to be a mother. However, this also makes them feel guilty, sad and their self-esteem is reduced.
• Problems with the family communication about pregnancy in the family is often a source of conflict and even rejection from their own environment.
To prevent pregnancy in adolescents we can increase the use of contraceptives and support healthy programs in high schools.
In any case, the best prevention is to give young people a good sexual education from the bosom of the family. It is important to report the risks and complications of pregnancy in adolescence and all the changes that will occur from the time the teenager is pregnant.
Communication in the family is essential, therefore, there must be open communication so that young people have all the information they need at their fingertips.
